LONG BEACH— “I have said before and I will repeat again: People’s families are off limits,” Mr. Obama said. “And people’s children are especially off-limits. This shouldn’t be part of our politics. It has no relevance to Gov. Palin’s performance as a governor or her potential performance as a vice president. So I would strongly urge people to back off these kinds of stories. You know my mother had me when she was 18 and how a family deals with issues and teenage children, that shouldn’t be a topic of our politics.”
Senator Obama was right to quickly respond to the even quicker frothy-mouthed speculative bloggers on the Left. But how will he thwart the dozens of sure to come hit pieces by the Daily Kos, the Huffington Post or any of the countless other left-wing “news” channels over the next 64 days?
Its no surprise the Lefty Blogs are losing their cool over Governor Palin. As a former high school basketball champion, a beauty pageant winner, a sportscaster, a city council woman, and a mayor turned governor, Mrs. Palin embodies the hopes and dreams of American women of yesteryear. A poster child of the possibilities of what women’s suffrage could bring. Only, she’s a- wait for it- Republican (insert gasps, hisses and boos track here). The Left have long been waiting for women to be viewed as equals but as long as they’re blinded by party politics, they’re going to continue to wait a long time.
So here we are today talking about Sarah Palin’s newest and fifth child who somehow sits front and center as political fodder. And here is Governor Palin today spending her time speaking about a family matter that has nothing to do with any of us. Good thing we’ve all learned a couple of new facts today- 1) Governor Palin isn’t the type of person to lie about being pregnant to cover up for her unwed daughter and 2) her 17 year old daughter is pregnant.
What a day for news lows.
I do not doubt Senator Obama’s disdain for the recent rumors started by the Left. However, these rumors only bring further light to his own words. For it was Senator Obama himself that said back on March 29, 2008 that he’s “got two daughters, 9 years old and 6 years old. I am going to teach them first of all about values and morals. But if they make a mistake, I don’t want them punished with a baby.”
Do you think he’s kicking himself right now for those words? His prompt response today may be a slight indication.
I can not agree with you more. In fact I really do believe that McCain choosing Palin as a running mate was a well thought out idea and he made a good choice.
This is the 21st century! Just about every family has had a teen pregancy and the girl in question is 17 for goodness sakes!
This pregnancy is an opportunity to expore in the public eye that “choosing” life is not something to be damned.
At least the girl is owning up to her mistake and not hiding behind the backs of the abortion doctors(Murderers).
I got pregnant at 17 and was unwed. Certainly I hope that my children do not follow that example. However as a single mother I had a great job and owned my own home by age 23, without getting any child support.
Sure teen pregnancy can make life harder, but it’s not the horrifying scandel that the left is making of it. After all they are the free love, kill the innocent babies to promote a more irresponsible lifestyle type.
I think they are just angry that they can’t call Sen. Palin a hippocrite by encouraging her daughter to have an abortion. That would be a SCANDEL.
I think some facts about teen pregnancy and the realities the young Mothers who choose to have the babies would be valuable here. My strong inclination is that the outcome for the absolute majority (teens who have the children) both Mother and child isn’t good. I’m not suggesting that either decision is right or wrong here, but the law of this country is that abortion is legal. In addition, a parent who decides that their 15-year-old daughter is too young to have a child, and especially those that educate themselves on the likely outcome for a 15 year old having a child, may be doing that which is best for their daughter’s future by choosing abortion.
Governor Palin believes that a rape or incest victim that becomes pregnant should not have the choice of abortion! That would be victimizing the innocent twice! Imagine your daughter in that nightmare scenario? What would you do?
massasoit: I see what you’re trying to say, but this line just doesn’t work for me: That would be victimizing the innocent twice
The innocent child should not be killed because his/her father is a criminal and his/her mother is a victim of the crime. If a death sentence is to be handed down perhaps the best recipient is the perpetrator of the crime and not the child.
It’s funny though that you ask what would I do? I recall going to highschool with a guy that was a pretty good athelete and a smart kid. He had a great story. Graduated with good grades and went on to college. He was adopted into a loving family right after birth. He was concieved as a result of a rape.
Single parenting isn’t easy. No one would argue it is. This probably has a lot to do with Bristol Palin getting married. That and I would hope she loves the man.
And I believe this “right” was the result of a ruling in a court and not a law. Previously it was left up to the states to decide. And each state had its’ law. Some for the protection of life, others not.
But Mrs. Palin’s views are not foreign to politics or this country. So forgive me if I don’t find a pro-life Republican to be shocking. Or for that matter a pro-abortion Democrat. It is part of the platform of each party.
Sarah Palin is walking her talk. And there must be some level of respect for that, right?
I appreciate both of you taking the time to read my post and reply. I understand that the subject of abortion is both a deeply personal and highly controversial issue. I do not talk about it lightly and therefore, didn’t even bring it up in my post. I have my own opinion on the matter but for now, I see no need in me stating it. I know women who have chosen to have an abortion. I know women who have chosen to keep the baby. I also know women who have chosen to carry the baby through the full term and place its care into the hands of another couple via adoption. I do not pretend that any of those 3 scenarios are easy ones to make. I suppose the main point of my post was to show how boldly the left are willing to walk into other peoples lives with no regard of the damage they can do to a person emotionally. Governor Palin has handled this unfortunate attack on herself, her baby and her daughter (and her daughter’s soon-to-come child) with nothing but grace. Barrack Obama, through his quick response, has certainly limited the damage the left leaning bloggers could’ve heaped upon his presidential bid but it’s important to note his past words. Referring to a baby as a “punishment” is an awful way to go about things. Yes, Sarah Palin’s daughter made a mistake by getting pregnant at such a young age (17) but this happens to hundreds of thousands of teens every year in America. For the left to jump on this as a means to attack Governor Palin is simply detestable.
With all due respect I think it is Sarah’s daughter that is walking her Mother’s talk and I hope not for political reasons.
Yes. That is true concerning her teen pregnancy. But I would imagine her mother, after teaching a value system that protects an unborn child regardless of potential hardships, was a good roll model for living out that value system.
Also notable to point out that one of the candidates is the result of a teen pregnancy. So, yes I find it unusual when he refers to it as punishment.
Simple fact of the matter is that abortion should be an issue decided on a state-by-state basis. It is the Constitutional way to handle things. However, legislation by the American Supreme Court is the simplest way to get either side’s objectives passed down the people’s throats. God forbid we actually sought to amend the Constitution as it lays out.
BaldManMoody: Thank you for joining us at the Missive! Just how shiny do you keep your head?
It involves Crisco. Unfortunately, I cannot muster enough hair to even appear anywhere near as close as your baseball mascot. I don’t agree with all the points that you guys make, but I am impressed with the writing. Definitely well done. Obviously as a supporter of states’ rights and strict Constitutional constructionism I am represented by Ron Paul in St. Paul. I find it interesting that no major media outlet has devoted attention to him at all. Well actually I don’t – he represents TRUE change from the status quo whether delivered by a Democrat or Republican.
As for the third parties this year, I am totally unimpressed. I truly wish Ross Perot was here to make a stand. I will likely write in Ron Paul this time around if I even make it to the polls. After all, I reside in Massachusetts and my vote will most certainly never count as I am of a little more conservative bent than most in the state.
BaldManMoody: “my vote will most certainly never cout”. You gotta stand up for yourself more than that. Suck it up man. You don’t dive into the crisco every morning just to sell yourself short. Now go out there and let your voice be heard!
I dive into the Crisco every morning so that I can actually make a difference in the world of business.
The sheer volume of absurdity perpetrated on the American people by our political “leaders” is truly amazing. I remember a certain individual from a certain undergraduate institution that used to speak of “predestination” to be the American President. A student population once saw through his evangelical pandering. Now we have a man claiming that he will heal the earth, calm the rising of the waters. I didn’t realize I was to live to watch the coming of the Obamessiah. What troubles me the most is that sadly most of the youth of this country has been sold on such soaring rhetoric… I do have to give it to McCain – I can at least get a specific out of him to determine whether I should vote for him or not. Obama just gives me sweeping rhetoric, discusses change and doesn’t provide a roadmap, heck, I don’t even think I get a heiroglyphic (sp?).
I will most certainly vote in the upcoming elections for all offices available, but if I cast my ballot for President I will be writing my choice in.
Attaboy! You go out there and do it!
You knew a man who claimed to be presdestined for the US presidency?
